Collagen Cream

On this site we have talked about collagen, and the fact that our skin, our body’s largest organ, is largely made up of collagen, and that as the collagen structure breaks down as we age, the fibers in our skin that provide it’s elasticity no longer have a structure to connect to, causing our skin to look what we consider ‘older’. That would make it then seem like collagen creams are a great way to fight signs of aging in our skin. However, what seems logical is not always true. And so it is for the case of collagen creams. You see, collagen molecules can’t penetrate the top layers of our skin. They are just too big to be absorbed that way. And in order for a collagen cream to reverse the signs of aging relating to collagen, it would need to penetrate our skin and provide a collagen structure for fibers to connect to. So what happens to the collagen in these

creams when they are applied? It sits there on the outer surface of your skin, or penetrates perhaps the very top layers. Now, this does not mean that collagen creams are not effective. Many contain additional ingredients that are able to reduce the signs of aging in some way, and just use collagen as a way to convince consumers to purchase their products. However, it is those active ingredients that do the work. There are many exciting new advances that are showing a lot of promise in repairing and stimulating the collagen in our skin, but just smearing collagen on the surface is not one of those advances.
